News for September 2010150th ANNIVERSARY UPDATE AUGUST, 2010 St. John's 150th
Anniversary Committee continues to work on the upcoming celebrations to be held in
2012. Many people are diligently working on the anniversary activities and projects. We
have reached another goal. Enough money was received in the 150th Anniversary Fund
to do the second project of replacing the windows in the cry room, church, choir room
and both sacristies. The new double-paned, tinted windows now give us protection from
the heat and cold. They also let in more light than the old frosted ones did. The Laurence
Smith Window & Door Company did the work completing it on August 4th.
The 150th Anniversary Fund has been growing steadily reaching $18,713. After paying
for the newly installed windows, the balance towards the next project stands at $4,812.
This project is to replace the carpeting in the church, narthex, and stairways to the choir
loft. Carpeting in the narthex will reduce the noise there and the carpeting to the choir loft
will make the ascent and descent much safer than it is at the present time. New carpeting
in the altar and sanctuary will significantly beautify our church. The last project is the
Sesquicentennial Garden to be located on the corner of Alp and Jane. In your offering
envelope packet are special giving envelopes for the 150th Anniversary Fund. We
encourage you to use them at any time. Your gift will be added to the 150th Anniversary
Fund, which was established by the Voters Assembly last year. We will keep you updated
on the fund in the forthcoming newsletters. We also have a 150th Anniversary Fund
poster by the table in the hallway outside the church office to keep you up to date.
The 150th Anniversary Committee includes: Joan Behrmann, Lois Gottleber, Adam
Kipfmiller, Jerry & Marilyn Kolb, Dorothy Kriewall, Gloria Kriewall (co-chair), Donna
Kutzke, Diane Legner, David Meisel, Judy Peil, Julie Schmidt, Joyce & Walter Schrenk,
Kathy Schwartz, Pastor Schweppe, Sherry Sylvester, and Doris Waldbauer (co-chair).
If you are interested in joining, please let Gloria Kriewall or Doris Waldbauer know.
We will need more volunteers for various functions closer to the 2012 date. We will be
having special services throughout that year and the need for volunteers for these events
will give a lot of opportunity for serving St. John's at that time. Prayers for the success of
this celebration will help us reach our goals. Thank you.
Midweek Bible Class That time of year is quickly coming when we will resume
our study of the books of the Bible on Wednesdays. Our first session will begin on
September 1, and will continue through Thanksgiving. During this session, we will
study Paul's letter to the Ephesians, in which he, even though imprisoned, expresses
his joy to his beloved people about the blessed result the Lord produces through the
gospel ministry, that is, "one, big, happy family." You can attended either on Wednesday
mornings at 10:00, or on Wednesday evenings at 7:30.
Public School Catechism These classes are offered on Tuesday afternoons, 3:30 –
5:00, for our 7th and 8th grade members who attend public schools to prepare them for
Confirmation. Pastor Schaewe will have a brief informational meeting with parents of
eligible students after the 10:30 service on Sunday, August 29, after the Monday service
on August 30, after both services on Sunday, September 5, and after the Monday service
on September 6. Please plan on making one of these meetings, or let Pastor know in
another way if your child will be attending.
Sunday School will begin on Sunday, September 26. Sunday School will be held on
Sundays, beginning at 9:15 am. The purpose of Sunday School is to teach children the
stories of the Bible that give them the foundation on which to build the teachings of
God’s Word that prepares them for confirmation and beyond. While this is especially
beneficial for public school students in this respect, all of our children are invited and
encouraged to attend!
Out of Town Meeting Pastor Schaewe will be in Milwaukee for the annual Special
Ministries meeting September 27-29.
School starts on Tuesday , September 7th . This will be a half day of school with
dismissal at 12 noon. All members are invited to the opening worship service which starts
at 8:30 am.
Bible Information Class We shall start a new Bible Information Class on September
26. This class will cover all the major teachings of the Bible. It is required for new
members and non-members who have children in our school. It is also a good refresher
for members. We shall meet Sundays at 9:15 a.m. (between services), for 20 lessons.
Your children can attend Sunday school at the same time. Meet in the council room.
Constitution For some years your leaders have been updating our constitution and
bylaws. This task is close to going before the voters for approval. If you would like to
proof the document, and/or compare the old constitution to the new one, there is a copy
of both on the counter in the council room. We would appreciate your input.
Improvements You have noticed some changes around church lately. In July the bell
tower was cleaned and received new tuck pointing for $16,900. Last month the windows
in church were replaced at a cost of $13,900. Right after that we received a new Durolast
roof on the school for $48,670. The tower and roof were paid with borrowed money,
and the windows came out of the 150th Anniversary Fund. Currently we are working on
landscaping, utilizing the stones that used to be on the old roof. Special thanks to Ray L.
Schwall and Bill Behrmann for directing these projects. |
Worship Update - September 2010This Month In general, as we continue in the season of Pentecost, we will continue
to look at the words our Lord spoke to his believers regarding their lives on this earth.
However, we do have some "special focus" services during the month of September.
Please review the following information for all the details.
Services in September
Sept. 5/6 – Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost We hear our Lord Jesus Christ, while
pointing out how the people of this world like to "position themselves" in life's situations,
give the warning that the first will be last, and so makes this application for us: "Humble
yourselves." We will celebrate the Lord’s Supper in these services.
Sept. 7 (8:30 am) – School Opening Service Our school year opens with a focus on
these year’s theme: “Build on the Rock.” Remember, this service is not just for the
students, teachers, and parents of our school. This is another great opportunity for all
of our members to gather and worship our gracious God for his blessing of Christian
Education.
Sept. 11/12/13 – Walking Together We join with the other members of the Wisconsin
Synod in giving thanks to the Lord for the blessings he has given us as we "walk
together" as a synod, and in renewing our mission of "working together" to get the gospel
to every nation, tribe, language, and people. On Saturday, September 11th, we will have
our annual church campout service at State Park (at one of the pavilions) following the
potluck – around 6:30 pm. Following the services on Sunday and Monday, we will be
watching the WELS Connection video, and we will also try to show it on Saturday at the
campout service.
Sept. 18/19/20 – Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost God's Word urges us to love
the lost, just like Christ did. Our annual church picnic service will be at Auburn Park,
and will begin at 1:00 pm on Saturday, September 18th, followed by the picnic and other
activities. In the services at church on Sunday and Monday, we will celebrate the Lord’s
Supper.
Sept. 26/27 – Evangelism Sunday: "Baptism Sunday" We will take a special look
at how Holy Baptism is the Means of Grace the Holy Spirit uses to bring "all nations,"
adults and children, to faith in the Savior Jesus Christ and what special meaning Baptism
still holds for those who have been baptized. Our plan is, during these services, to offer
Baptism to those who desire it for themselves or their children. If this is true for anyone
you know, please let Pastor Schaewe know as soon as possible. SesquicentennialIn less than five years we shall be celebrating our congregation’s 150th Anniversary. This is a big occasion, and we want to recognize it in a way that glorifies our gracious God. We will be needing a lot of help. If you would like to volunteer, see Pastor Schweppe. And please come forward with your ideas for this blessed occasion, which will be here before we know it! |
